Sampling Procedure Comment: Investigated in this project were frequency development and over-filling, social re-structuring, political influence by the professors and informal socialization by the student subculture of the German student body in the Empire. Particular attention was paid to research on the backgrounds of the development of academic illiberalism. The causes of susceptibility of the young academics who later formed the political leadership group, for a ´chauvinistic nationalism´ were to be investigated, whereby two kernal questions were posed: on the one hand the question of the societal origin of the student body, on the other the question of political socialization. The answer to the first question was determined with help of quantitative methods based on occupation information in university registers. A long time series from 1871 to 1914 was produced by means of which the transfer from educated classes to middle-class property owners and the rush of lower middel class (the new middle classes) became clear. At the same time on this source basis through a career analysis the mobility between origins and later occupations were compared. These analyses were rounded out primarily by evaluation of fraternity and Korps lists, members directories of religious student groups etc. The second question of political socialization of the students had to be investigated with qualitative i.e. traditional historical methods. Here estates of prominent politicians, civil servants, industrialists etc., publications of the student organizations as well as literary presentations of contemporary student life were drawn on as sources for evaluation. Thus in the project a combination of quantitative and qualitative procedures of historical social research and socialization research with the aid of EDP was applied.
Collection Mode
  • The data for the sample (approx. 15000 systematically selected cases) was obtained by content analysis of the register of the University of Bonn as well as the member lists of the student fraternities of the University of Marburg. File ´Bonn 1´: This is a 10% sample (6.510 records) from the register of the University of Bonn for 1840 to 1850 as well as 1865 to 1914. The sample was drawn by copying and coding every twentieth page of the register. Each page contains approx. 20 names. File ´Bonn 2´: Contains the data of Bonn students of statistical control year 1893 (893 records). File ´Marburg´: Since the student society records for the University of Bonn were destroyed in the Second World War, for a three-fold time segment besides the survey material for the file ´Bonn 2´ fraternity and organization members lists and registers of the University of Marburg for 1872/1873, 1888-1893 and 1913/1914 were used (2.821 records).
