Description
  • Abstract

Researching mobility, defined as movements between different areas. Depending on the areas between which a movement is observed one differentiates various types of mobility: 1. movements between different occupations = occupational mobility 2. movements between branches of industry (economic sectors) = sectoral mobility 3. movements between different places of residence = regional mobility. Such mobility can be determined between the generations (intergenerational mobility) or within a generation (intragenerational mobility or career mobility). In the framework of the study on courses of employment the mobility between the generations is only recorded as occupational mobility while with mobility within a generation movements between other areas (branches of industry and regions) are analysed. Topics: Education, occupational activity in 1955, occupation change, regional mobility, social origins, education and course of employment, social origins, education, occupational position of respondent, cohort differentiation, change of company and occupation, length of company employment according to year of interest, regional mobility, occupational position of father and respondent 1955, 1965 and 1970.

Male German working persons.
Sampling
0,5% sample of male German working persons. Bases for the sample were: For the workers the G-file of the employment office (5% sample). For the self-employed and civil servants the address material of the microcensus was used. The Institut fuer Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung {Institute for Job Market and Occupation Research} received the addresses of self-employed and civil servants of the microcensus of April 1968 (1% sample) from the Federal Bureau of the Census. Thus with a sample rate of 0,5% of working persons every second male self-employed and civil servant from the microcensus was sampled for the investigation, altogether 12100 self-employed and 6000 civil servants. In the sample 125 occupation classes of the previous occupation system are represented. Every person selected represents 200 working persons in the Federal Republic of Germany so that statements can be made about conditions in the entire Federal Republic for 1968 based on this sample.
Collection Mode
  • The data were collected in the framework of interviews conducted by qualified employees of the employment offices. The standardized survey form was designed such that the selected person was also interviewed about education, a possible occupation in 1955 and 1965 as well as occupation at the time of survey, thus 1970.
