    Influence of use of thalidomide preparations on the type and frequency of birth defects among new born in North Rhine-Westphalia. Topics: Attitude to pregnancy and contraception; health and medical care before and during pregnancy; use of insecticides, pesticides, motor vehicles and sun lamp during pregnancy; television habits, pet possession and employment during pregnancy; nutrition habits and consumption of semi-luxury foods, tobacco and alcohol during pregnancy; medications taken; results of medical check-up; information on health and X-ray load of father of the child. Demography: age (classified); sex; marital status; number of children; religious denomination; school education; vocational training; occupation; employment; household income. Interviewer rating: willingness of respondent to cooperate; city size.

Mothers of children which were born between 1.1.1960 and 31.3.1962 and had birth defects; Mothers of children which were born in the same space of time without complications
1624 mothers of children born between 1.Jan.1960 and 31.Dec.1962 with birth defects. As comparison group a random selection of mothers was interviewed who in the same time interval gave birth to a living child.
