  • Abstract

    Media usage of the West German population in 1983. Topics: 1. detailed determination of the degree of familiarity and frequency of use of newspapers, magazines, subscription magazines and magazine subscription clubs; manner of receipt; detailed determination of television habits and paying attention to television commercials as well as radio commercials, differentiated by time of day, work days, weekends and stations; going to the movies; frequency of travel and destinations; month of travel; places of reading with magazine subscription clubs and magazines; reading level; possession of television set; possession of radio equipment and car radio; having a yard and type of yard; pet possession; type of public transportation available from residence; description of housing situation in form of number of floors and age of building; residential status; length of residence in building; do-it-yourself activities and repairs on building; personal athletic activities and attending sporting events; shopping habits for groceries and beverages and preferred type of store. 2. Furthermore the following questions were newly included in the survey program: frequency of exercising selected leisure activities; type and extent of employment; size of circle of acquaintances and friends; use of reading circles; number of telephones with main extension; possession of bicycle; teletext reception or planned acquisition of a video recorder; number of video cassettes available; number of video cassettes purchased pre-recorded; place, manner and frequency of renting video cassettes; video system; possession of video camera and video games; number and type of entertainment electronics devices available in household. Demography: age; sex; marital status; year of marriage; number of years of marriage; number of children; religious denomination; school education; vocational training; occupation; employment; income; household income; number of persons with their own income; possession of durable economic goods; size of household; composition of household; respondent is head of household; characteristics of head of household and person running household; year of marriage, possession of drivers license; party preference. Interviewer rating: willingness to cooperate; interest of respondent in survey topic; length of interview; weekday of interview; number of contact attempts. Also encoded was: administrative district; ZIP (postal) code; state; size of municipality classes after Boustedt.
