The study takes up from the investigations from 1981 for West Berlin. They are archived under ZA Study Nos. 1266 to 1271, and summarized under ZA Study No. 1265. In additional to the representative samples in West and East Berlin, in the municipal area of West Berlin supplemental samples were taken in the areas with overly high proportions of AL or Republican voters. The number of cases in the four sample areas break down as follows: East Berlin 868 cases, West Berlin 1378 cases, AL areas in West Berlin 225 cases and Republican areas in West Berlin 215 cases. The questionnaires in East and West Berlin are the same to the extent possible. Differences arise because: 1. questions on a few topics were only reasonable in one part of the city and 2. given different expression of a characteristic in East and West Berlin different possible responses and lists had to be used.
