    Attitude to AIDS and sexual conduct. Topics: 1. Oral survey: attitude to health precautions and ability to influence one´s own health, center of control (scale); number of marriages up to now and firm partnerships; age in first firm partnership and first marriage; number, sex and length of current firm partnerships; common household with partner; frequency of meeting with partner and number of firm partners of one´s partner; knowledge about the illness AIDS; self-classification of knowledge about the illness; causes for the illness; knowledge about infection and communication of the illness; knowledge of someone infected with AIDS; classification of the risk of infection with selected situations in daily life and with sexual conduct; assessment of the possibility of AIDS infection of an unborn child during pregnancy; knowledge of AIDS risk groups; assumed possibility of recovery and cure for AIDS; estimate of death rate with AIDS illness; measures of AIDS patients to protect against infection; personal risk of infection and currently perceived as well as expected risk of infection at place of residence; concern for AIDS infection; behavioral changes as protection against infection; most important preventive measures; behavioral changes conducted oneself as well as determined among friends; perceived certainty of being able to avoid the risk of infection through behavioral changes; interest in an AIDS test and knowledge about the place where such a test can be conducted; interest in the test result; assumed spreading of AIDS in Germany and estimated number of AIDS patients; contact fears regarding AIDS patients; perceived threat from environmental dangers and AIDS; institution responsible to eliminate the AIDS dangers; ability to contain AIDS and possible means to limit further spread; most important sources of information about AIDS; conversations about AIDS with relatives and family members; information about AIDS from the media; media usage; religiousness; self-classification of social class. Written survey (part to be filled out): a) contraception: methods of contraception used by person interviewed as well as his partner; contraception method to avoid venereal diseases; knowledge about use of condoms; source of supply for condoms; distance from this source of supply; attitude to use of condoms (scale). b) first relations: age at first sexual intercourse and sex of sexual partners up to now; spouse as first sexual partner or number of sexual partners before first firm partnership; totals and sex of sexual partners up to now; last sexual intercourse. c) relations in the last 12 months: extra-partner sexual intercourse; toleration of extra-marital sexual intercourse by partner; sex of sexual partner; sex for gifts (prostitution); use of condoms in prostitution; unsuccessful uses of condoms; vacation or business trips. Relations in the last four weeks: frequency of sexual intercourse with partner; condom use; frequency of extra-marital sexual intercourse in the last four weeks; sexual partner from another firm partnership and assumptions about further sexual contacts of this sexual partner; condom use. Familiarity of venereal diseases and personal infection with a venereal disease at all as well as in the last 12 months; measures to protect partner from an infection; information of the partner about personal infection; knowledge about methods to protect against venereal diseases; blood transfusion received in the last 5 years; place of blood transfusion. Use of drugs: users of drugs in one´s circle of friends; personal use of drugs; injecting drugs in presence of others; use of needle oneself or by a partner; use of used needles; frequency of sexual intercourse with drug addicts. Drinking habits, use of alcohol: place and frequency of drinking alcohol; duration of drinking; sexual intercourse with personal partner as well as other persons in connection with use of alcohol. Sexual practices: sexual practices exercised or exercised in the last four weeks and use of condoms in this.

The area of intimate questions was conducted in form of a written survey under supervision of the interviewer (form to be filled out). The envelope, sealed by the respondent, was first opened in the institute. The survey is part of an investigation series encompassing ZA Study Nos. 2234 to 2237.
