    Assessment of the political and economic situation of the country. Attitude to the European Community. Topics: Judgement on general development of the country; judgement on the financial development of the household in the last year and expectations here for the next year; attitude to the free market economy; judgement on the speed of economic reforms as well as of privatization of public companies; satisfaction with the development of democracy in the country; assessment of the extent of respect for human rights in one´s country; attitude to the goals and activities of the European Community; designation of the country with which the future of one´s own country will be most closely tied; religiousness; frequency of conducting religious activities; ethnic origin; self-classification on a left-right continuum; feeling as a European; intent to participate in the election; party preference. Also encoded were: region; city size; date of interview; time of start of interview; presence of other persons during interview; willingness of respondent to cooperate.

The 16716 cases of the data set are distributed among the individual countries as follows: Albania 1054 cases, Armenien 1000 cases, Bulgaria 1198 cases, Czech Republic 817 cases, Estonia 1011 cases, Hungary 972 cases, Latvia 992 cases, Lithuania 1020 cases, Macedonia 1002 cases, Poland 1097 cases, Romania 1176 cases, Russia (European) 1377 cases, Slovakia 684 cases, Slovenia 1000 cases, Ukraine 1171 cases, Belorussia 1143 cases. The data set described here contains the data of all participating countries in a cumulated form. The cumulated data set of Eurobarometer 2 is archived under ZA Study No. 2251, the cumulated data set of Eurobarometer 3 for Central and Eastern Europe under 2321. Due to differing survey topics the East Eurobarometer 1 was not cumulated and is archived separately for the individual countries under ZA Study Nos. 2252 to 2260.
