    Quality of life, environmental protection, product range, and sports facilities in Halle. Topics: Satisfaction with the apartment and the living environment; number of living space; number of square meters of the apartment; owner of the property; monthly rent or charge; ancillary costs: heating and hot water costs; housing status; modernisation levy; interest in acquisition of the inhabited real estate; conditions under which the real estate is would be bought; housing benefit; neighborhood relationship; respondent wants to relocate in the following two years; Preferred residential area as moving destination; reasons for possible move; current work area and work area at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall; location of the workplace or training place; assessment of the safety of one´s own workplace; general and municipal political interest; interest in cooperation in a party; intention to vote in elections; party preference; mood: feeling lonely, feeling good, feeling lost, zest for action, joie de vivre, fear of the future (scale); current personal, urban and East German economic and social situation and expectations for the next five years; importance of selected living conditions and urban services; satisfaction with these living conditions and urban services in Halle; solidarity with the city and the urban district; importance of selected life goals, life principles and value orientations (scale); most important municipal tasks of the city of Halle; satisfaction with the environmental conditions in the residential area and expected changes; type and extent of environmental pollution in the residential area; waste-conscious purchasing; use of recyclable material containers; advantages and disadvantages of the urban district; assessment of shopping possibilities in Halle; preferred shopping shops and preferred business type for selected goods; preferred locations for selected services; shortcomings in the range of goods; proposals for improvement the range of retail outlets. Social Welfare Office: awareness of certain services of the social benefit system; use of certain counselling services; preferred contact point for problems; form of this support; attitude towards counselling centres and counselling services (scale); number of children; wish to have children; time for the next child. Green spaces: preferences, disruptive factors and wishes in the use of the green spaces; interest in tree sponsorship; life satisfaction; future optimism; fair share of the national product. Sports: Sports facilities in the residential area; importance of new sports facilities; importance of support for competitive sports in Halle; suggestions for the renovation or new construction of sports facilities. Unemployed respondents were additionally asked: period of unemployment; plans for further professional activity; the chances of realization of these plans; sources of securing livelihood; accepted conditions for resumption of work; changes in the social environment due to unemployment. Demography: duration of residence in Halle; sex; age (year of birth), grouped; German citizenship; marital status; household composition; school leaving certificate, professional qualification; occupational status; extent of occupational activity; household size; household income; sources of income. Additionally coded was: participation in the 1993 citizen survey; municipality; respondent commented on the survey; weighting factors.

Sampling Procedure Comment: Simple disproportional random sample from the register of the residents´ registration office. In urban districts with low population numbers an increased number of cases was obtained.
