    Quality of life, housing situation and urban image of Halle. Topics: Satisfaction with the apartment and the living environment; owner of the inhabited real estate; number of living spaces; number of square meters of the apartment; living equipment; monthly rent or charge; modernisation levy; ancillary costs included; year of construction of the inhabited dwelling; duration of residence in the apartment; number of apartments in the house; assessment of the vacancy rate in the Prefabricated housing estate; neighbourhood relationship; relationship of the Germans to foreigners in the residential area; wish to relocate in the following two years; preferred place of residence; possible reasons for relocation; preferred status of the new apartment; preferred condition of the new apartment; solidarity with the city and the quarter; image (semantic differential) and specific characteristics of the city of Halle; importance of selected municipal tasks; support for socially disadvantaged people; frequency of visits to the City centre; preferred means of transport to the city centre; attitude towards Sunday open for business; political interest in general and local; interest in party activity; intention to vote in elections, party preference; current trust in City Council, Lord Mayor, City Administration and the local press and five years ago; current East German, urban, and personal economic situation and expected situation in five years; memberships; function in association; voluntary activities; current Work area and work area at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall; evaluation of one’s own job security; location of the job; duration of the distance to and from work; means of transport used to get to the workplace; feeling of threat: by increasing the cost of living, recklessness, violent crime, fraudsters, possible loss of housing, pollution, immigration of foreigners, right-wing radicalism, left-wing radicalism, illness and unemployment (scale); importance of selected living conditions, of municipal institutions and services and satisfaction; importance of selected life goals, life principles, and value orientations (scale); number of children, relationship with family, friends and acquaintances; life satisfaction; estimation of the personal future and social security; level of information on the social security; responsible institution for social security; possibility of support in case of social difficulties; kind of this support; own willingness to provide support. Unemployed people were also asked: duration of unemployment; sources of livelihoods; plans for the future professional activity. Demography: duration of residence in Halle; sex; age (year of birth, grouped); marital status; household composition; school leaving certificate; professional qualification; professional activity; current professional position; household size; persons in need of care in the household; and their degree of relationship; household income; sources of household income. Additionally coded was: participation in citizens´ surveys 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997; municipality; respondent has commented on the survey; household type; weighting factors.

Sampling Procedure Comment: Simple disproportional random sample from the register of the residents´ registration office. In urban districts with low population numbers an increased number of cases was obtained.
