For this survey, a nationally representative sample of 1,700 private schools was drawn from a list of private schools in existence in 1983 in 75 areas of the country. Information was gathered on: religious orientation of the school, enrollment, grade span, staff size, tuition, programs offered, and years of operation. Additional information on existence of advanced placement (AP) programs, number of students enrolled in 12th-grade classes and number of students graduated from among them, and SAT test score results for seniors was collected from secondary schools.
