For this survey, a nationally representative sample of 1,700 private schools was drawn from a list of private schools in existence in 1983 in 75 areas of the country. Additional information on existence of advanced placement (AP) programs, number of students enrolled in 12th-grade classes and number of students graduated from among them, and SAT test score results for seniors was collected from secondary schools.
