  • Abstract

This survey is concerned with trends in the use of health services and the expenditures made for these services. One or more members of selected families provided information regarding use of health services, the cost of these services, and how this cost was met for the calendar year 1963. Information on health attitudes and beliefs was also collected for the head of each household (or spouse). In addition, data were gathered from hospitals, employers, and insuring organizations concerning hospitalizations and insurance coverage reported in the family interviews. These data were then combined with family reports to achieve the best possible estimates for hospitalization and health insurance coverage variables. Data are supplied at the individual level and are broken down by age, income, race and residence.
  • Methods

The data are not weighted and there are no weight variables.
  • Methods

ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Standardized missing values.; Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes..

Sampled Universe
Non-institutionalized population of the continental United States.
Standard multi-stage area probability sample of 2,367 families consisting of 7,803 respondents, spouses, and heads of household.
Collection Mode
  • The age distribution for the 7,803 respondents in this dataset was: 65-74 (N=474), 75-84 (N=206), 85 (N=39). This 1963 survey was authorized in order to compare conditions with those found in similar studies in 1953 and 1958. A later Survey of Health Services Utilization and Expenditures was conducted in 1971 (ICPSR 7740) and is available through ICPSR.

2015-05-27 The SPSS setup files were updated to conform to current standards. SAS and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, a SAS transport (CPORT) file, a R data file, a tab-delimited data file, and a PDF codebook have been added to the collection.
