    Occupation, sector, region and horizontal mobility among male working persons. Topics: current activity; occupational position; company size and area of business; activity main focus; materials used for work; description of training requirements as well as extent of occupation experience, minimum age and necessary training time for occupation practiced; gender relevant to occupation; age limit for occupation; characterization of activity regarding necessary muscle strength, robustness, stress on nerves, skill in dealing with people, problem-solving ability as well as ability of expression orally and in writing; presence of access limitations or practice limitations due to statutes, safety regulations or professional organizations; occupational position. Course of employment: school education; year at leaving the school providing all-round education; favorite subject; school achievements in the subjects mathematics and German; subject area of school vocational training and year of final examination; final examination at occupational training school; year of final examination; training or preparation time in civil service; number of started and completed apprenticeships; assignment of the apprenticeship to an occupation class and the training company to an area of business; year of final examination or discontinuation of last apprenticeship; duration of employment in training company at conclusion of apprenticeship; reasons for leaving training company; change of training company during apprenticeship; change of training occupation during apprenticeship; start and completion of master training; year of first employment; times of unemployment; winter unemployment; change of occupation; usability of occupational knowledge and skills from an earlier occupation for current activity; interruptions of employment; retraining measure; reasons for change of occupation; move to Western Germany after 1944; moving frequency; connection of move and taking work at another location; degree of reduction in earning capacity; occupational position of father; subjects at last school attended and usability of the knowledge in current occupational activity; participation in courses on occupational further education; employer or employee as initiator of this further education participation; course accompanying occupation or full-time; course length. The following questions were posed to self-employed: begin of self-employment; company founded oneself, inherited or leased. The following question was posed to civil servants: year of first appointment. Depending on the situation of the respondent, for 1955 or 1965 a determination was made of employment, occupational position with information on company, activity main focus as well as materials used for work and duration of employment in the company.

Sampling Procedure Comment: The sample is two-part: 1. employees: 5-percent sample from the so-called G card file of the employment offices. Of the 665000 persons contained in it, every tenth was drawn into the sample. The selection took place with help of a birthday sample: all men born on the first, second or third day of each month were selected. 2. The sample of self-employed and civil servants: A sample was drawn from the address material of the Federal Bureau of the Census for the microcensus.
