The 1990 St. Louis Region Small Sample Travel Survey was a home interview survey conducted in the city of St. Louis, St. Louis County, and parts of Jefferson County, Madison County, St. Clair County, Monroe County, and St. Charles County in Missouri. Respondents were asked to record their travel and activities for a 24-hour period. They were also asked for detailed information regarding their trips, including mode of transportation, trip purpose, departure and arrival times, and number of passengers. Demographic variables include gender, age, employment status, household size, number of children under five years old in the household, household income, and whether respondents had a valid driver's license at the time of the survey.

ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes..

A minimum sample size of 1,400 households was recommended for the survey. This number was chosen based on three main criteria: (1) the models to be calibrated using the survey, (2) the statistical significance of the survey results, and (3) the available budget for the survey. The total number of completed, useable households sampled for the survey area totaled 1,446. Based on 1990 estimates prepared by East-West Gateway Council of Governments staff, the area sampled encompassed 862,500 households. Thus, the sample rate was about 0.17 percent; each sampled household represented about 600 households.
