    Content Learning in adulthood. Employment status. Characteristics of the main professional activity. Professional situation. Educational background: regular education (Part 1: school, Part 2: training). Participation in various forms of learning in the last 12 months. Formal Education (FED). Regular courses of education, further training and educational events. Informal learning (INF) in the last 12 months. Access to information on learning and training opportunities. 1. Job-related information: employment status; employment situation; unemployment benefit; paid employment; previous and current employment; year of last employment. 2. Characteristics of the main professional activity: weekly working time; full-time/part-time; occupation (classification of occupations according to ISCO 2008); completed vocational training required; activity corresponds to the learned occupation; differentiated occupation; career group; start of self-employment; group of self-employed persons; employment of permanent employees; number of employees in the company; fewer than 10 or more persons employed in the company; sector (NACE code); type of enterprise; sector; enterprise is part of a larger enterprise; start of employment with the last employer; change of job; more diversified activity; change of employer; change of occupation; fixed-term or permanent employment contract; monthly gross income; unemployment last year; duration of unemployment in months; attitude to own school time (scale: fun in school lessons, school-leaving certificate achieved, truancy). 3. Educational background: regular education a) School: highest school leaving certificate according to ISCED97; school location; school type; type of school leaving certificate; school attendance abroad: school successfully completed with or without a certificate; type of correspondence between the foreign school leaving certificate and a German school leaving certificate; targeted school leaving certificate upon leaving school abroad; time (year and month) of leaving school; school completed within the last 12 months; attempt to catch up with the school leaving certificate or leave without a certificate; achieve a higher school leaving certificate; educational institution for catching up on the educational qualification; targeted school leaving certificate; degree achieved; date (year and month) of catching up on the school leaving certificate; school attendance completed within the last 12 months. (b) Training: type of vocational training (preparatory vocational training, basic vocational training year (BGJ), vocational school, in-company apprenticeship, preparatory service for civil servants in the middle service, school of health care, training of master craftsmen or technicians; university of applied sciences, university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education, university of administration, studies at a university of applied sciences or university, doctoral studies, other or other training); duration of training; training completed or currently in training; training completed with or without a diploma; last discontinued training; year of completion of vocational training without a diploma; other vocational training prior to the current one; completion of the previous training or of study; completed doctorate; occupation or field of current training; ISCED97 field of current training; date (month and year) of completion of training; level of qualification; highest level of professional qualification; incomplete or discontinued training: field of training completed without a degree; date (month and year) when the training was discontinued. 4. Participation in various forms of learning in the last 12 months: Formal Education (FED) - Regular programmes: total number of programmes attended; participation in formal programmes (FED); education and training over the last 12 months and duration of training; selected programme for FED questions; related to the current and the most recently completed training measure: initial training or part of a continuing training phase; type of course; ISCED fields of training; reasons for participation; employment status before training; duration of training; number of lessons per week; training during paid working time (in whole or in part) or paid exemption for educational purposes; full or partial assumption of costs by the respondent; cost sharing by the employer, the employment office, another public body or by parents, partners or family; amount of privately financed costs for participation or tuition fees, examination fees and learning materials; receipt of a scholarship or financial support from public authorities; type of support (e.g. Bafög, maintenance allowance from the Federal Employment Agency); form of training (classroom or seminar room instruction, workplace training, group work with supervision by a teacher or lecturer, computer-based learning programmes for self-learning, e-learning or distance learning); main form of learning; use of knowledge and skills from training. 5. Continuing education and educational events (non-formal education- NFE): attendance of regular courses in the last year; NFE participation in the last year; number of NFE activities; participation in courses, training courses, seminars or trainings longer than one day, short-term educational and continuing education events of a maximum duration of one day, individual instruction at the workplace or private lessons in the last 12 months; number and content (topic) of these courses. 6. Information on selected training activities: type of event; participation for professional or private reasons; form of continuing training activity; type of continuing training; number of teaching hours (course volume) in the last 12 months; description of continuing training activity; duration of activity; duration of activity; number of days, weeks, months, extent of continuing training in hours, length of event hour; working status when the activity takes place; performance of continuing training activity during paid working hours or leave for educational purposes; share of continuing training during working hours; reason for leave for educational purposes; reason for participation in continuing training: company directive, suggestion by superiors or on one´s own initiative; receipt of a certificate or a certificate and type of this certificate; certificate or certificate legally required from the employer for certain activities; costs incurred for further training; full or partial assumption of costs for participation and examination fees, or of learning materials by the respondent; cost sharing of the employer, the employment office or public authorities, parents, partners, family or others in the further training; evaluation of the overall benefit of the knowledge of the further training; possible and actual further training benefits (finding a job or new job, career advancement, higher salary, new professional tasks, can achieve more, personal satisfaction through more knowledge and skills or in another personal respect, none of these, no expectation of benefit. 7. Access to (further) education: overview of continuing education opportunities; search for information on continuing education in the last 12 months; successful information procurement; type of information procurement (Internet, family, friends, colleagues, employers, career guidance, programmes of continuing education providers such as adult education centres, educational institutions, media, trade journals and textbooks); desire for more information and advice on continuing education opportunities; personal advice on continuing education opportunities; time of advice; consultant for the last personal continuing education advice; satisfaction with this advice. 8. Informal learning (INF) or self-learning in the last 12 months (learning from family, friends or colleagues, reading books or journals, use of courses on the computer or the Internet, knowledge programmes in other media); most important learning path; up to two learning activities were surveyed: topics of informal learning activity (ISCED fields); motivation for self-learning (professional or private reasons); time of informal learning (on work or leisure time). Demography: sex; age (year, month, age grouped); first language learned in childhood (mother tongue); German nationality; born in Germany; household type; household size; household composition; living with a partner; net household income. Additionally coded was: ID (respondents and courses); location size (BIK); west-east; weighting factors and extrapolation factors; ISCED97; ISCED-Fields; highest school leaving certificate low, medium, high, qualification level according to ISCED level 97 low, medium, high; highest vocational qualification combined.

Note
Two data sets exist: one data set based on the respondents (AES personal data set) and a data set based on the training activities mentioned by the survey respondents (Event-related AES data set, non-formal education/NFE). The AES is based on the internationally used classification of learning activities (Classification of Learning Activities). Captured are three forms of educational participation: 1st Formal Education (FED, 2. non-formal education (NFE, non-formal education), and educational measures, called‘Weiterbildung’) and 3. Informal Learning (INF, informal or self-learning). Compare the previous study, which is archived under ZA Study No. 5354.
