  • Abstract

    The project examines the career and family passage of a cohort of young skilled workers in two differently structured labour market regions and six selected occupations that completed their training in 1989. In a quantitative and qualitative longitudinal study, training graduates from 1989 shortly before the end of their training and one year later were asked about their educational and professional careers to date. In the last phase of the project, the survey was extended thematically to the link with the passages in partnership and family. A typology based on the quantitative longitudinal study formed the basis for the selection of the young people with whom three problem-oriented interviews were conducted. The interviews focused on questions of stability or changes in work orientation, employment interests and strategies for coping with the transition risks, which vary in degree from region to region and from occupation to occupation. Wave 1: Training profession; training environment; type of external institution; company size; economic sector; duration of training in months; month and year of the final examination; takeover offer of the training company; conditions for acceptance (open); school leaving certificate; year of school leaving certificate; type of school institution; participation in vocational preparation measures (e.g. training preparation year, vocational preparation year, practical occupation year, etc.); work between school leaving certificate and current apprenticeship (e.g. immediate start of training, internship, attendance of a vocational school, etc.); frequency of unemployment and duration of unemployment; expected employment after completion of vocational training; job prospects and type of this job (e.g. for skilled workers in their own training occupation); year of start of apprenticeship; training as a retraining measure; retail sector; retail contract. Demography: sex; year of birth; nationality; marital status; children; form of housing. Wave 2: Training occupation; completion of training; month and year of completion of training; takeover offer; takeover conditions (open); current situation or activity (e.g. work in the training occupation or in another occupation, vocational training, school, further education/training, studies); type of vocational training, school, further education/training, field of study; place of residence (anonymised); activity since vocational training (e.g. work in the training occupation or in another occupation, etc.); frequency of unemployment and duration of unemployment; current occupation; scope of employment; type of employment contract; employment in the training company; company size; economic sector. Wave 3: Training occupation; successful completion of training; month and year of completion of training; current situation or activity (e.g. work in the training occupation or in another occupation, vocational training, school, further education/training, study); type of vocational training, school, further education/training, field of study; activity in the 5 years since vocational training; work as part of a job creation measure (ABM) or. for a temporary employment agency since vocational training; participation in in-service training; current occupation; assessment of the occupational situation since vocational training; scope of employment; hours per week for part-time work; type of employment contract; still employed in the training company; sector; company; place of residence (anonymised). Demography: marital status; children; number of children; housing situation; occupation of partner; occupation and professional position of parents; changes in the areas of housing and family since the first move out of the parental home (event). Wave 4: Current situation; work orientation: importance of various job criteria (e.g. job security, personal development, good earnings, etc.).); attitude to professional activity (scale); assessment of the conditions in one´s own occupation with regard to reduction of working hours, interruption of work and compatibility of family and career; first degree in a skilled occupation; first vocational training successfully completed; month and year of completion of the first vocational training; further general qualification since 1989; month and year of this further qualification; completion of another vocational training; Vocational training in the form of apprenticeship, training at a vocational college, retraining, studies at a university of applied sciences or a university or civil servant training; respective field of study and type of degree as well as month and year of degree; completion of further training; month and year of completion of this further training; types of further vocational training; importance of various reasons and objectives for further vocational training; scope of working hours; employer last position; 1. Job in the training company; current situation or type of activity; type of job placement for the current or last position; type of employment contract; employer; number of employees; gross income (grouped); professional position; number of employees for self-employed persons. Partnership and family: marital status and living situation; distribution of tasks in the household; highest professional qualification of the partner; current activity of the partner; scope of working hours of the partner; gross income of the partner in comparison to the own income; professional wishes of the partner (very important occupation, heavy time burden by the occupation or training, desire for promotion); children in the household; month of birth and year of birth of these children; number of children; type of institutional care respectively. Third-party care and scope of care; division of tasks child care; further children planned; desired re-entry into the profession and desired date for re-entry (interviewee and partner); childless persons were asked: general desire to have children; planned scope of employment in the first year after the birth of the child; desire to re-enter the profession with children and desired date; division of tasks child care; planned regular third-party care for the child; again all: ideal age and maximum age of a woman and of a man for the first child; criteria for the right time to start a family; preferred employment distribution among infants, kindergarten children and school children; dependence of employment distribution on earnings, career prospects, importance of the profession, agreement of partners; assessment of the suitability of different care options for children under one year, children aged 1 to 3 years and aged 4 to 6 years; parent who should primarily look after the children (depending on age group); attitude towards children (scale). Living and parents: place of residence (anonymized); moving frequency since 1989; professional relocation; parents´ highest school leaving certificate; parents´ highest vocational training certificate; mother´s professional activity during the respondent´s childhood; parents´ professional position. Additionally coded was: ID; file type (person file, participation waves 1, 2, 3, 4); questionnaire wave (1st wave 1989); training region (Bremen, Munich); set number; examination date (summer, winter). Additions and derived variables: Occupational Classification Federal Statistical Office 1992; last profession according to ISCO (International Standard Classification of Occupation) 1968; SIOPS (Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale) according to Treiman; Magnitudeprestige (according to Wegener); ISEI (International Socio-Economic Index of Occupational Status) (according to Ganzeboom); socio-economic status (according to Tegtmeyer, Handl); professional prestige according to Tegtmeyer, Mayer); autonomy scale (according to Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik); class scheme (according to Goldthorpe); course type; typology of occupational biographical orientation patterns. The activity and employment biography was recorded in detail for each episode in three data sets: Event wave 1 to 3: ID; episode number; date of final examination; date of beginning and end of episode; episode length; date of beginning and end of episode (relative to completion of training); state at beginning and end of episode (detailed and rough classification); censoring variable (censored or state change); profession at beginning and end of episode (ISCO code and StaBu code). Professional career since 1989 event wave 4 question 4: ID; episode number; month and year of completion of education; beginning and end of episode (month and year); length of episode (in months); state at beginning and end of episode; type of episode (main episode or parallel episode); censorship variable. Professional career since 1989 event wave 4 question 15: ID; episode number; month and year of completion of training; beginning and end of episode (month and year); length of episode (in months); starting and finishing profession (StaBu 92 and reduced to max. 2 jobs, ISCO68, Prestige (according to Treiman, Wegener and Ganzeboom); weekly working time for start and finish profession; change of the respective professional situation compared to the previous episode; takeover by the training company; same employer as at the beginning of the episode; episode type; censorship variable.
