    Social reality in Europe. E-Communications. Common Agricultural Policy. Media and discrimination. Medical research. Topics: 1. Social reality in Europe (only in EU25, BG, RO): happiness; importance of each of the following aspects to personal life: work, family, friends and acquaintances, leisure time, politics, religion, helping others, health; satisfaction with selected issues of daily life: own house or flat, quality of life in residential area, own standard of living, travel facilities for going to work or shopping, own state of health, time for personal interests, medical services in local area, shopping facilities in local area, job opportunities in local area, childcare facilities in local area, schools in local area, leisure facilities in town; support network in case of: needing help around the house when ill, needing advice about serious personal matter, feeling depressed, needing money to face an emergency; most important things for getting ahead in life; mainly responsible person in the household for: cleaning, cooking, ironing; number of children; happiness with number of children; attitude towards selected statements with regard to current job: too demanding and stressful, well paid, dull and boring, good career prospects, dangerous or unhealthy conditions, necessity to learn new things, participation in decisions concerning own work, good work-life balance, use of own knowledge and skills, pleasant colleagues; confidence to keep current job in the coming months; reasons for not being confident; likelihood to find a new job within six months (scale); expectations for the next twelve months regarding: personal life in general, national economic situation, financial situation of the own household, national employment situation, personal job situation; assessment of current personal situation compared to five years ago and expected development in the next five years; confidence in the future of own pension; professional education to date is sufficient or need for more specialised training; preferred measure to guarantee the financing of the pension system: work longer, maintain retirement age and increase contributions, maintain retirement age and receive less, none, combination of all; expectations regarding the life of future generations in the EU; trust in selected institutions: national government, national parliament, political parties, city council; voluntary work for selected organisations; applicability of the following to the national social welfare system: provides wide enough coverage, could serve as a model for other countries, too expensive for national society; feeling of safety in residential area; approval of the following statements: feeling to be left out of society, feeling of being looked down upon because of income or job situation, risk of falling into poverty; preferred statement: anyone is at risk of poverty at some time in their lives, risk of poverty is confined to certain groups of people; feeling of belonging to majority or minority group in the own country in terms of race, religion, or culture; attitude towards the following statements on people from other ethnic groups and immigrants in the own country: contribution to the diversity of cultural life, cause of insecurity, increase unemployment, needed in certain sectors of economy, solution for the problem of Europe’s ageing population; most important problems in the own country; preferred statement with regard to the selection of students by universities or other places of higher education: must be open to all students who have completed national secondary education, must be able to select on the basis of grades and motivation. 2. E-Communications: number of the following device and services in the own household: standard TV, wide screen TV, mobile phone subscriptions, mobile phone pre-paid arrangements, mobile phone giving access to advanced mobile data communications services, fixed telephone accesses, ISDN line, desktop computer, laptop computer, internet accesses, Wi-fi modem or router; TV reception via: aerial, cable TV network, satellite TV via satellite dish, Digital Terrestrial Television (i.e. aerial plus decoder), telephone network plus modem; subscription for additional TV channels to: cable-TV company, satellite company, telephone network company; name of fixed telephone line provider and of fixed telephone services; willingness to give up the landline if mobile phone use would be at the same price as calls with the fixed telephone; attitude towards the following statements on fixed telephone services: service operator provides clear bill, possibility to check usage in a simple way, possibility to block access to costly services, current landline tariff can easily be compared to other offers, awareness of price comparisons between operators by third parties, possibility to keep fixed telephone number; reasons for not having fixed telephone line; frequency of using public payphones; reasons for using public payphones; number of household members using a mobile phone; reasons to switch to an advanced mobile phone service; main benefits of mobile phones; providers used for mobile telephony; reduced use of mobile phones due to receiving unsolicited commercial messages (spam); attitude towards the following statements on mobile phone services: stable connection, no connection problems, possibility to check consumption in a simple way, possibility to block access to costly services, current tariff can easily be compared to other offers, awareness of price comparisons between operators by third parties, use of a mobile phone bears no health risks, possibility to keep mobile telephone number; reasons for not having a mobile phone; type of internet access in the household: dial-up connection using a standard telephone line, dial-up connection using an ISDN line, ADSL or similar type of connection, cable TV network, mobile phone network, satellite network, via an electrical power line; devices used to access the internet; use of a PC for phone calls over the internet; name of internet provider; attitude towards the following statements on internet connection: stable connection, download speed remains constant, provider announces network connection cuts, provider can easily be contacted in case of internet connection problems, helpful information from helpline staff or support site, current internet tariff can easily be compared to other offers, awareness of price comparisons between operators by third parties, possibility to restrict access to websites with harmful content; reasons for not having broadband internet access; willingness to change to broadband internet access if: possible to buy together with fixed telephone service without paying for fixed telephony line rental charges, possible to drop fixed telephony service; significant problems relating to spam, virus attack, or spy ware infection in the last twelve months and consequences; use of antispam software on PC; use of antivirus software on PC; reasons for not having internet access at home; willingness to subscribe to the internet if: possible to buy together with fixed telephone service without paying for fixed telephony line rental charges, possible to drop fixed telephony service; desire to be informed if personal data are stolen; frequency of using: paper telephone directories, online telephone directories, directory inquiries; subscription to a bundle consisting of: TV channels, fixed line telephone, mobile phone, internet access; attitude towards bundles; phone number called in an assumed event of emergency in the own country: 112, national numbers, other numbers; knowledge of the EU wide emergency number. 3. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) (only in EU25, BG, RO): awareness of selected EU labels; future importance of agriculture and rural areas in the EU; knowledge test on EU agricultural issues: rural areas cover around 90% of EU territory, approximately 3% of the population are farmers, EU exports more agricultural products than it imports; awareness of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP); preferred main priorities of the CAP; assessment of selected EU activities in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as appropriate: ensuring a fair standard of living for farmers, improving competitiveness of European agriculture, helping farmers to adapt their production to consumer’s expectations, enhancing rural areas, ensuring reasonable food prices, ensuring availability of supplies of agricultural products, stabilizing markets of agricultural products, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, favouring methods of organic production, protecting family type farms, promoting respect for the environment, ensuring healthiness and safety of agricultural products, ensuring good treatment of farm animals, providing sufficient information to consumers, encouraging quality production; approval of granting more funds for the development of rural areas and direct support of farmers; main responsibilities of farmers in society; attitude towards reducing payments to farmers not fulfilling the following standards: environmental standards, animal welfare standards, food safety standards; assessment of the amount of financial support from the EU budget for agriculture and rural development as appropriate; desired development of the proportion of the EU budget allocated to the CAP over the next ten years; self-rated knowledge about: agricultural issues in general, Common Agricultural Policy (CAP); desire for more information on selected topics; most trustworthy source of information. 4. Media and discrimination: role of national media in fighting discrimination; attitude towards the following measures of the national media in order to fight discrimination: more reports on this issue, more drama with regard to minorities, better accessibility of media professions to ethnic minorities; attitude towards the presentation of TV news by a journalist of an ethnic minority; national media increase tensions between different communities in the own country by mentioning ethnic or religious origin of people in short news; justification of mentioning ethnic or religious origin of people in short news. 5. Medical research (only in HR, TR): interest in the following fields: nature and environment, economic and social matters, art and literature, science and technology, sports and outdoor activities, medical and health research, home and gardening, European and international news, celebrities and entertainment; awareness of collaborative medical and biological research projects between researchers from the own country and from other European countries; awareness of EU funding of these projects; sources of information on these projects; main reason for no awareness; main sources of information on science, or medical and health research; reason for lack of interest in science and in medical or health research; main sources of information on personal subjects of interest; interest in the following aspects: research results, launch of research projects and objectives, way research is carried out; most trustworthy persons or authorities with regard to information on biological and medical research; most interesting aspects concerning research on major diseases; chronic physical or mental health problem. Demography: nationality; marital status; occupation; professional position; left-right self-placement; age at end of education; sex; age; type of community; household composition and household size; country of birth; parents’ country of birth; possession of durable goods (entertainment electronics, internet connection, possession of a car, a flat/a house have finished paying for or still paying for). Additionally coded was: respondent ID; country; nation group; date of interview; time of the beginning of the interview; duration of the interview; number of persons present during the interview; respondent cooperation; size of locality; region; interviewer ID; language of the interview; weighting factor.

Sampled Universe
Population of the respective nationalities of the European Union Member States and other EU nationals, resident in each of the 25 Member States and aged 15 years and over. The survey has also been conducted in the two accession countries (Bulgaria and Romania) and in the two candidate countries (Croatia and Turkey) and in the Turkish Cypriot Community. In these countries, the survey covers the national population of citizens and the population of citizens of all the European Union Member States that are residents in these countries and have a sufficient command of the national languages to answer the questionnaire.

Note
The module on E-COMMUNICATIONS (QB) replicates questions asked in the framework of Eurobarometer 64.4 (ZA4416). For this part of the questionnaire where respondents are asked to answer for their household, the ´number of individuals in each household´ was introduced as additional weighting criterion (W31 to W53), and the representative samples of individuals aged 15 and more converted into household samples. For more details, see the technical specifications annexed to the basic bilingual questionnaire. The module on BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL RESEARCH (QF) was only surveyed in Croatia and Turkey. The EU 27 member and accession countries have been interviewed identical questions in the framework of Eurobarometer 65.4 (ZA4508).
