  • Abstract

    The study focuses on three main aspects: first, on the socio-structural characteristics of internationally mobile Germans, second, on the motivation for individual mobility decisions, and third, on the consequences of international mobility on individual living conditions such as family life, professional career and well-being/ life satisfaction. The questionnaires cover the following topics for emigrants: 1. Arrival at the current place of residence 2. Motivation for emigration 3. Living conditions before emigration 4. Return to Germany 5. Current living conditions 6. General questions concerning individual characteristics Analogous, the questionnaires cover the following topics for returnees: 1. Arrival at the current place of residence 2. Motivation for return migration 3. Living conditions before return migration 4. Future stays abroad 5. Current living conditions 6. General questions concerning individual characteristics Additionally generated variables: education (ISCED and CASMIN), occupation (ISCO-88).

Sampled Universe
Emigrants: Those German citizens, who have deregistered in Germany and have emigrated abroad between January, 1 and December 31, 2013 and who were born before January 1, 1995. Returnees: Those German citizens, who have emigrated from abroad and have registered in Germany between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013, and who were born before January 1, 1995.
Sampling
Probability Sample: Multistage Sample Emigrants: On the first level: Selection of communities for which addresses of Germans living abroad were accessible. (Berlin, Erfurt, Freiburg, Cologne, Konstanz, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nürnberg). On the second level: random selection of target persons. On the third level: if multiple target persons are living in the same household, then random selection of the person to be interviewed within the household. Returnees: On the first level: Selection of communities for which addresses were accessible. (Berlin, Cologne, Erfurt, Essen, Freiburg, Hamburg, Kiel, Konstanz, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nürnberg). On the second level: random selection of target persons. On the third level: if multiple target persons are living in the same household, then random selection of the person to be interviewed within the household.
Collection Mode
  • Self-administered questionnaire: CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) Postal contacting of survey participants, asking them to access a particular homepage via a personalized code and to complete there a standardized online questionnaire.
