  • Abstract

    The project investigated the influence of teachers’ professional knowledge on students’ development of system expertise in biology. Teachers’ professional knowledge was expected to partly explain the development of students’ system expertise between school classes of the same grade. Measurement instruments for teachers’ professional knowledge were developed and tested. Results of the test phase were satisfactory. The measuring instruments were applied in a field study with a pre-test post-test design including an intervention. The measurement instruments developed for measuring teachers’ professional knowledge about biological systems (topic: Die Miesmuschel im Wattenmeer (The mussel in the mudflat)) proofed to be reliable and valid. Subsequently, these measurement instruments were applied in an intervention study aiming to investigate the relationship between teachers’ professional knowledge (expert knowledge and subject didactics knowledge) and students’ system expertise.
