    Educational activities in the course of life. Access to information on learning and training opportunities. 1. Job-related information; 2. Characteristics of the main professional activity; 3. Educational background: attendance of regular courses of study: a) school education, b) vocational training; 4. Participation in various forms of learning in the last 12 months: Formal Education (FED); 5. Non-formal Education (NFE); 6. Information on selected continuing education activities; 7. (Further) education barriers; 8. Access to (further) education; 9. Informal learning (INF); 10. Social participation as a learning opportunity; 11. Foreign language skills. Demography: sex; age (year of birth, month of birth, age open and grouped); first language learned in childhood (mother tongue); mother tongue(s) if bilingual; German nationality; migration background; other nationality; born in Germany; other country of birth; continuous in Germany; number of years in Germany; age when moving to Germany; household type; living together with a partner; age of partner; marital status; children; total number of children; number and age of children in the household; children under 5 years in the household; children from 6 to 14 years in the household; other persons in the household; age group of other persons in the household (household size and household composition); net household income; satisfaction with household income; information on parents: born in Germany; country of birth of parents (migration background); school education and professional or academic education. Additionally coded: ID (respondent and courses); city size (BIK); west-east; weighting factors and raising factors.

Data and File Information

Three data sets are available: a data set based on the respondents (AES personal data set), a data set based on the continuing education events named by the respondents (event-related AES data set, non-formal education/NFE) and a data set Informal Learning (INF, informal learning or self-learning). The sample of the German AES 2016 (this study ZA6887: Adult Education Survey (AES 2016 - Germany) was extended by an additional sample of persons with migration background as well as some additional questions. This study is archived under ZA6986: Survey on Further Education of Persons with Migration Background (AES-Migra 2016). Based on the extended overall sample, for the first time more precise statements on the educational participation of adults with migration background are possible.
