  • Abstract

These data were used in the preparation of the book "Starving the Beast" by author, and Principal Investigator, Monica Prasad. The book is a history of the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act. The files include historical data on economics and politics in the Unites States and other advanced industrial countries, as well as full Stata files for all statistical calculations in the book.
  • Methods

The data and documentation are divided into three folders within the available zip file. Chapter 4: Contains two Stata files. Each file contains 3,587 cases. The larger file contains 1,875 variables and is a copy of the ANES 1980 Merged File available from ICPSR. The smaller file contains 35 variables. These variables are named differently, but possess the same variable labels as in the larger file. The differences in the data can be attributed to how missing data is coded in the larger file. There are also associated .do and .log files to be used in conjunction with the data files. Also included in this folder are four Word documents. Three of the files contain output from the data, while the fourth file is a Read Me document directing users to another resource of where the data is available. Chapter 10: Contains one Stata file with 8 variables and 62 cases. There are also associated .do and .log files. Lastly, there is an image file containing a chart, and an Excel file containing GSS data from NORC's GSS Data Explorer. Appendix: This folder contains 21 data files. There are corresponding pairs of files, in Stata and Excel, for 10 different economic indicators. The 10 Stata files each contain 4 variables and 1144 cases each containing a case for each year from 1965 to 2016 for each of the 22 countries with a score of the economic indicator. This is a "long" view of the data. The 10 corresponding Excel files are a "wide" version with each file containing 54 variables and 22 cases. The remaining data file in the folder (taxws.dta) contains 26 variables and 1100 cases. There are accompanying .do and .log files pertaining to this data file. The last four files of the folder are Word documents containing outputted data analysis tables. One additional Excel file exists in the zip file outside of the three sub-folders. This file contains 12 worksheets containing data and figures included in the book.
