  • Abstract

The assessments of the first longitudinal section (BiKS-3-10) of the BiKS-Study took place in families as well as in preschools and schools in the states of Bavaria and Hesse starting in the fall of 2005. The starting sample was composed of about 550 children who, at that point, were cared for in 97 different preschools. On individual days – at an interval of about half a year across six times of measurement – assessments of language and cognitive development of the selected children in preschool were conducted. Parents were asked about their children and the upcoming educational choices in personal interviews, while preschool teachers of the children participating in the study provided information on the situation in preschool. In addition, the familial and institutional learning environments were collected by means of (semi-) standardized observation methods. Most of the participating children were enrolled on time for the school year 2008/2009 and further surveyed by the hosting primary schools up to the 4th grade across eight times of measurements. Thus, a new phase of the project had begun, in which the primary school teachers were also included and interviewed. In selected classes all children and parents willing to participate were furthermore incorporated into the study. Hence, the sample could be expanded to about 1,000 children. Alongside the children that were enrolled in school on time, the relatively small groups of early and late enrolled children were further monitored. The focus of the longitudinal section BiKS-3-10 was on the development of competencies in its dependency on structural, attitudinal and procedural aspects of the promotion in the family, preschool and school as well as the formation of school management decisions.
