Description
  • Abstract

This study intends to measure a baseline of teachers’ opportunity to learn (OTL) and academic language exposure (ALE) of children in kindergarten and primary 1 level. In the survey, teachers reported on their instructional practices in a contextualized setting in their classroom. Further observations were carried out during demonstrative sessions. The data obtained were used to investigate basic psychometric properties of this survey: specifically, (a) the distinctness of OTL and ALE or overlapping characteristics in literacy and numeracy instruction. (b) the match between information reported by teachers in the survey as well as those collected during the classroom observation. Measured simultaneously was the CBI to assess teachers’ performance using Ghana’s contextualized assessment methods.

Sampling
SamplingThe sample was drawn from a population of schools under the targeted areas in the eastern region. A subset of nursery and primary teachers were further recruited for the purpose of this study. The schools are classified constitute the Zone of Influence (ZOI) of ZE-LEAP. Sample Size Calculation In selecting a sample size representative of the population of the ZOI, the formula of ss=(Z^2*(ρ)*(1-ρ))/∁^2 Where:
Z = Z value (1.96 selected for 95% confidence level ) p = percentage picking a choice, (.06 used for sample size needed)c = confidence interval  A confidence level of 95% (Z-value of 1.96) with a corresponding confidence interval (c) of 0.06 resulted in a sample of 25 respondents. However, to accommodate non-responses, an additional 10% sample were further culminating to a sample of 29 respondents.
Collection Mode
  • coded on-site observation~~face-to-face interview~~on-site questionnaire~~
