Description
  • Abstract

Wagemann’s investigation deals with the significance of the distribution of goods and forces in space for the economy, realized by commerce, transport, and by mail as well as by the choice of locations by industry and commerce. Significant price-differences between locations and price-fluctuations indicate the failure of a functional distribution of goods and forces. (Wagemann, E. 1929: Einführung in die Konjunkturlehre. Leipzig: Quelle & Meyer, S. 16f). Prices alone, therefore, are not an adequate basis for the calculation of the economic position; Wagemann developed a more sophisticated barometer of economic climate, encompassing the following elements: 1. Relations of fluctuations: Equal fluctuation (primary products import and responsive prices); ´beam of rays´ (correlation between living expenses, wholesale prices, and responsive prices); effected fluctuation (market-barometer: stock market, commodity market, finance market); counter motion, shearing motion (export surplus of manufactured goods, import of primary products and of semi-finished goods). 2. Construction of the economic-climate-barometer: The Institute of Economic Research’s ´barometer-system´. Topics: Considered time-series: (a) annual data (1820 to 1913): prussia’s marriage rate, prussia’s wholesale prices for rye, foreign trade balance for rye, wholesale trade index of industrial products prices (Industriestoffpreise); the Ruhr’s miner’s wages, bank rate, pig-iron-consumption, total foreign trade. (b) monthly data (January 1924 to June 1929): monthly allowance, share index (total), index figure of wholesale prices (total), index figure of living expenses (total), hourly wages (blue-collar-workers, unskilled), index figure of incoming orders, import of primary products and semi-finished goods, index figure of industrial production, extraction of pig iron, activity rate, state railway’s coach-provision, export of finished products, general development of sales, cash flow, credits of central banks.
