AbstractThe city of Wesel was the biggest Prussian fortress in the west and the most important city in the Duchy of Kleve. But in 18th century the city turned from a relatively important Hanseatic City into a nowadays relatively unimportant lower Rhine city. Central for this development was the Seven Year´s war (1756-1763), in this entire period Wesel was occupied by the French. This is why the end of the seven year´s war is chosen to be the starting point of the analysis. The goal of the study is to show the social and economic structure of the population and its development until the end of the 18th century. Topics: - Development of Wesel´s population (births, marriages, deaths) - Grain process (wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat, oat) in Wesel - Professional groups in Wesel, - Development of trade: Paraphengelder, Akziseaufkommen, Akzisefixierung, - Number of household per populated house - Furthermore: household size, shift, value of houses, property of houses, poll tax, occupations.
