Description
  • Abstract

The population description of Dachsberg is the oldest and most comprehensive statistic of the Electoral Bavaria that contains detailed information about economic and social structures of the middle class in the old empire. Data of the description was collected between 1771 and 1781; besides data on the total population it also contains data on chosen status groups and classes (clergy, aristocracy, civil service, craftsmen, daily workers, beggars), on territorial structures and even on individual buildings (castles, churches), statistical material on crafts, business and trade. In modern language: the population description of Dachsberg is a combined population and industry statistic. The part concerning the industrial statistic was prepared in a machine-readable form; population statistic was included insofar as it is important for the understanding of the professional statistic which is part of the industrial statistics. Data was collected for the territory of the Bavarian sovereign, this includes: the Electorate of Bavaria the Electorate of Upper Palatinate and the Swabian properties of the Wittelsbachers. In each case five steps were undertaken in order to edit the data: - Structuring of the reign complex for data collection - Outline data (population; numbers of masters, journeyman, apprentice boys; number of daily workers) - Distribution of business within the reign complex - Density of business (business per 1000 inhabitants) For all Bavarian revenue offices and the respective associated municipalities following issues are listed: - Outline data (population; number of courts; numbers of masters, journeyman, apprentice boys; number of daily workers and seamstresses) - Industry and business data (crafts, business, trade) - Distribution of business within a court (absolute values, precentral values for an industry group at the entire industry) - Density of business (business per 1000 inhabitants, precentral numbers for different industry groups)
