AbstractThe historical development of the German Stock-Credit Banks (Aktienkreditbanken) before the beginning of the First World War is often discussed on a national but also on an international level. The perspective of traditional history sees the large Stock-Credit Banks as decisive institutions for the German industrialization. Until now this hypothesis could only be confirmed or rejected quantitatively for the last decades of the Kaiser Reich. The goal of the study in hand is to create for the first time a statistic on German Stock-Credit Banks that reaches back until 1848. So far the only data available was balance data for a very limited period between 1883 and 1913. Starting with the year of foundation of the first German Stock-Credit Bank the ‘Abraham Schaaffhausensche Bankverein´ from cologne in 1848, present data series on the development of Stock-Credit Banks are added. The data which is collected on the microeconomic level is aggregated to an overall economic statistic. The data that was published already; especially the series by Walther G. Hoffmann are complemented. The basis of the aggregated banking statistic are the balances if the individual Stock-Credit Banks. The aggregated statistics was made possible by a change in stock law from 1884, which required that all stock companies submit their annual financial statement at the responsible trade register. In the previous years the Stock-Credit Bank mostly published their balances in regional newspapers, only large Stock-Credit Banks used supra-regional newspapers for publishing.
