  • Abstract

The study in hand is about a case study of a machine tool manufacturer from Dortmund. The author uses an economic approach and aims to show and analyze the relation between the company development and the social-historical developments. The main aspects taken into account are business cycles, business relations, production, dales, development of employees and corporate welfare. The central question within the study is which company specific conditions for success and crisis are important besides the general economic development. The company Wagner & Co. was one of the pioneers in the machine tool industry in the Ruhr area. Within a few years it belonged to the top group within that branch. The company from Dortmund was characterized by a tide network of personal relation between the shareholders and by the central position of the technical director H.O. Wagner. This constellation shaped the rise and the crisis of the company which bucked the trend of product specialization for a long time. Only a few years before the takeover by Stinnes in the First World War, Wagner & Co. found a coherent corporate strategy. Looking at the economic, technical and social development of the company the orientation and structure of a middle company in the times of industrialization shall be presented exemplarily. In the empirical part topics like corporate organization, development of production, wages and qualifications of employees and imports and exports are covered.
