  • Abstract

    This data collection aims at providing long series on different sections of the German educational system. For this purpose, special data have been compiled, mainly from the fields of primary and secondary schools, vocational education, universities, the population, and selected key figures. These time series refer exclusively to data on the national level. Consequently, no data series referring to the German Länder have been itemised within the scope of this compilation. Hereby the official educational statistics by the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt) serve as a main source, providing continuous data collections and regular reporting on a long-term basis. These educational statistics, however, were set up as recently as in the 1950s, so that the data series primarily refer to the period between 1960 and 2000. The accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany in October 1990 is reflected in the data series by a distinct break between 1989 and 1990. From 1960–1990 (and partly until 1991), the respective values refer to the area of the Old West German states.
