  • Abstract

Long term time series on education were collected in order to demonstrate quantitatively the different periods of the development of the German educational system from 1775 and 1989. (Claude Diebolt: L’Évolution de longue Période du Système Éducatif Allemand, XIX et XX Siècles. Cahiers de l’ISMÉA. Économies et Sociétés. Série: Histoire Quantitative de L’Économie Française. A.F. no. 23, 1997. S. 27). This study serves as a reverence work for the development of the German educational system. The data collection in HISTAT is focused on the period from 1775 to 1945. In order to reach the goal to be a reference work for German educational history, long series from all points in time of the investigation period and on all important variables in the area of primary, secondary schooling, universities, population and selected macroeconomic indicators were made available. The author made time series from different underlying statistics comparable and complemented missing data with own estimations (Diebolt, 1997, a.a.O., S. 28). The data base from the literature and from the research process was assessed on the basis of three criteria: the statistical series must be representative, homogeneous and continuous (C. Diebolt, 1997, a.a.O., S. 28). Register of tables in HISTAT (topic: education): Structure A.: Prussia B.: Berlin C.: German Reich Prussia: A.0. Share of illiterate persons A.1. • Types of data: All available sources with reliable representative data are collected by C. Diebolt. Official statistical publications of the German Reich and Prussia were used as well as different scientific studies such as the one of D.K. Müller on education systems Berlin or data from the “Quakri- project” (Qualification crisis and structural change of the educational system). Empty cells in the tables mean that for these points in time there is no data or there was no data found. “0” means that there were no cases at these points in time. The tables from the study about Berlin by D.K. Müller are an exception. In this case there is no difference between missing values and the value 0, for both cases a 0 is listed. Values estimated by the author C. Diebolt are identified with annotation in the respective tables. In addition to the data collection by C. Diebolt there are selected tables from the study on structural changes in the educational system in Berlin by D.K. Müller (Detlef K. Müller, 1977: Sozialstruktur und Schulsystem. Aspekte zum Strukturwandel des Schulwesens im 19. Jahrhundert. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht): In this study the connection between class specific reproduction and the process of differentiation of the educational system in the 19th century is analyzed. For this objective data on all school forms in Berlin was collected. Selected data on numbers of pupils, population development and public budget was taken from this study in order to supplement the study by C. Diebolt.
