  • Abstract

The rise of the german Ruhr-Area to the center of heavy industry began in the 1850s. In a first phase many large companies, which in many cases already combined various production stages, were establisehd under the legal form of stock corporations. The main requirements for the development of iron and steel industry of the Ruhr-Area in the 1850s were: - The penetration of the clay layer and the tappin of bituminous coal, which was very helpful by the production of metallurgical coke - The introduction of the coke blast furnace - The opening of carbonaceous ironstone deposit in the Ruhr-Area - The traffic connexion of the Ruhr-Area by the railroad - The increased demand for products of iron and steel industry, mainly through the expansion of railway network.
