  • Abstract

    This dataset includes responses from a community-based participatory research project conducted in collaboration between researchers at the University of Colorado Denver and Denver Homeless Out Loud, a community coalition with strong involvement of current and former people experiencing homelessness. This study was conducted with approval from the institutional review board at the University of Colorado Denver.
    The 36 question survey of 484 persons experiencing homelessness focused on respondents' experiences with police in Denver, CO, and on their self-reported personal safety and health conditions.
    The survey was conducted through the winter of 2018 and spring of 2019.

Sampling
The sampling frame consisted of people experiencing homelessness for more than six months in Denver, Colorado. Cluster respondents were selected from strategically chosen sites (e.g., shelters, soup kitchens, day services providers, immigrant day laborer centers, downtown parks, street corners, and homeless encampments) meant to ensure representativeness of the homeless population likely to spend time sleeping outdoors during the year. The survey was administered at different times of day at each location to a convenience sample of all respondents who were present at the time and willing to take the survey.
