Quantitative Development of General Stores, 1949 to 2000

AbstractUp to now neither an overall view on the development of German department stores nor a sufficient data base covering a longer period of the warehouses’ development existed. The contribution from Ralf Bank tried to close this gap. The investigator tries to eliminate this lack of information about the history of warehouses, which played a relevant role in the Federal Republic of Germany’s economic history and consumption history, by the compilation for the main indicators of warehouse development in long-term data series for the period from 1949 to 2000 (see Banken, R., p. 3). The main part of the data-compilation are the indicators on the warehouses total turnover, on the turnover of the single warehouse-enterprises, the indicators on operational results, annual net incomes, ratios of profit to sales, as well as warehouses’ product range structures. The investigator took into account for his investigation the department 4 stores Karstadt, Kaufhof, Hertie and Horten. Datatables in HISTAT A.01: The total sales of department stores (1949-2004) A.02: The turnover of the department stores, in Mio.
