    Survey in the member countries of the European Community on current political topics. The main survey focus of this Eurobarometer is: 1. The personal and economic situation of respondent as well as political attitudes 2. Judgement on the energy situation and attitude to nuclear power 3. Retrospect on the election of the European Parliament 1984 4. Attitude to the European Community 5. Miscellaneous Topics: 1. The personal and economic situation of respondent as well as political attitudes: expected development of personal and general economic situation for the coming year; expected strikes and international conflicts; probability of a world war (scale); primary cause for the economic problems of the country; attitude to import duties on food; general attitude to the USA (scale); judgement on the relation between one´s country and the United States; influence of American policy on war and peace as well as on the economic situation of the country; assumed attitude of the USA to a strong, united Western Europe; attitude to membership of one´s country in NATO; desired national behavior in the Afghanistan conflict; judgement on the conduct of the superpowers in their respective areas of influence. 2. Judgement on the energy situation and attitude to nuclear power: assessment of current and assumed future development of the energy problem of the country; assessment of the proportion of imported energy (scale); assessment of particularly reliable as well as unreliable energy providers from foreign countries; preferred concepts on provision of energy; judgement on the extent of energy waste; preference for government regulations or appeals to consumers to reduce energy consumption; preference for use of public funds to solve energy problems by research or subsidy for the consumer; energy form most stable in price, most reliable and most environmentally friendly; assessment of the risk of selected industrial facilities for people in their vicinity; attitude to further development of nuclear power plants as well as to the necessity of atomic energy for the electric supply; most alarming dangers of a nuclear power plant; expected development of power consumption in the next ten years; attitude to a reduction in the proportion of oil in generation of electricity; comparison of nuclear energy and coal regarding price, reliability and environmental pollution; personal measures to save energy in the past years as well as assessment of further savings possibilities; types of energy used for heating and cooking as well as that actually preferred; household furnished with durable economic goods. 3. Retrospect on the election of the European Parliament 1984: political interest; memory of the elections for the European Parliament; significance of European elections in the circle of friends and acquaintances; assumed reasons for the poor election turnout; personal election participation as well as voting decision according to sympathy or supposed chances of the party; influence of sex of election candidate on one´s own decision; party voted for or reasons for not voting; regret about not voting after results were announced; assessment of importance of the European Parliament for the European Community; attitude to a reduction in importance of the European Parliament. 4. Attitude to the European Community: attitude to membership of the country in the EC as well as resulting national advantages; attitude to efforts on unification of Western Europe; attitude to a united Europe and regret of a possible failure of European unification; attitude to an acceleration of unification efforts; preference for actions together with member countries or independent decisions in questions of regional differences, environmental protection, fighting inflation and unemployment, securing energy supply, aid to third world countries and national security. 5. Miscellaneous: self-assessment on a left-right continuum; attitude to political changes; party inclination; religiousness; feeling of happiness; general contentment with life; satisfaction with democracy in the country; personal opinion leadership; postmaterialism index. Demography: age; sex; marital status; religious denomination; school education and age at conclusion of school; occupation; company size; household income; household size; household composition; respondent is head of household; characteristics of head of household; respondent is person managing household; party preference (Sunday question); voting behavior at the last federal parliament election; degree of urbanization.
