  • Abstract

    Collective biographical investigation of the lives of social democratic parliamentarians in general (especially in relation to political and professional career patterns) and the structure of social democratic parliamentary parties in the Reichstag and in the state parliaments in particular. Topics: Birth, marriage, age and death, social and regional origins, education and professional training, position in career, political offices and offices in public administration, associations and the workers´ movement (party organization, journalism, unions, cooperatives, health insurance companies); modalities of seats in parliament.

Sampled Universe
All (ca. 7000) seats of the (ca. 2400) social democratic parliamentarians a) in the North German Reichstag, in the German Reichstag of the Empire, in the German National Assembly and in the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic and b) in the state parliaments (metropolitan council, House of Representatives, Lower House, Volkskammer etc.) of the 26 German states in the Empire and the (at first 25, then) 18 then 17 individual states of the Weimar Republic including the seat for the Volkstag in Danzig (1920-1937).

Collection Mode
  • Sources: a) Systematic investigation of printed sources: published official sources (incl. election publications, minutes of negotiation from the Reichstag and the state parliaments, registers of various sorts), published unofficial sources (primary and secondary literature with biographies or biographical notes or lists or registers of social democratic functionaries), general biographical reference works and collections as well as other general sources (incl. magazines, daily newspapers, yearbooks, almanacs, reports, minutes etc. of the workers´ movement). b) Systematic investigation of archive sources: records on births, marriages, deaths (church books, registry office and resident registers etc.) on courts and police (files on political crimes/criminals, files on the wanted and deported, files on suspects and those under surveillance by the political police etc.), on government, administration and organization (reports from state councils, files and material on Reich and state elections etc.). c) Selective information from biographical sources through (in total ca. 9000) postal surveys and inquiries: interviews of archives, state offices, registry officials, resident registries, institutions providing jobs, and descendants of the parliamentarians.
