  • Abstract

The end of the First World War meant an unparalleled cut in the history of the German and also in Darmstadt´s society. Suddenly, in November of 1918 the “long century” ended: ancient feudal power structures broke down; people started to take over the political decision making. In the study in hand the author describes the development of the four generations between 1800 and 1920 as well as the following generation on its way to the middle class society from 1920 to 1980. Ekkehard Wiest investigates changes in economic and social structure in four South German cities individually and in a comparative perspective including Hesse, using statistical quantitative methods. He divides his study in two parts: 1. 1800 to 1920. 2. 1920 to 1980. The goal of the study is to show and compare the structural change by means of changes in social classes and in occupation groups in the four cities during different episodes of economic development.
